Soundcities claims to be the first online open source database of city sounds and soundmaps from around the world, using both "found sounds" and "field recording".

These sounds can be...

  • listened to;
  • used in presentations on laptops; or
  • played on mobiles via wireless networks.

Users can, because of the sound art project by UK artist Stanza,...

  • contribute their own found sounds onto the various soundmaps; or
  • create their own soundmap; or
  • remix the hundreds of samples recorded from around the world in the database.

To locate recordings users can...

  • click on a placemark on the Soundcities map; and/or choose from the list of cities.

Users can also...

  • play the recordings directly from the Soundcities site; or
  • download the recordings as kml files to use in Google Earth.

Soundcities recordings combined with Google's Street View imagery could give learners a more complete picture of what it is like to be at ground level in a chosen city.
