YouTube:XL

Image of my YouTube XL Interface

YouTube XL is a modified version of YouTube designed to use on...

  • large-screen televisions; and
  • on Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs).

The interface makes it simpler to use by cutting out a lot of the clutter on the page.

Note: Theres no way of hyperlinking to a specific video, but users can add to their Favourites, which can then be accessed under the Favourites tab on the main YouTube XL screen.

When I accessed YouTube XL I was logged into my YouTube account; my clips were a...

QuieTube or SilenTube: Video without the distractions

Posted by John Dalziel on Monday, July 18, 2011, In : Video

QuieTube and SilenTube provide users buttons which they can drag to their toolbar.

When they see a YouTube video they want to use in resources/VLE/etc., they can click the button and they’ll get a URL which will let them, and/or their learners, watch just the video.

Users can embed these links into IWB pages to go straight to the video page.

Visit http://quietube.com/ or http://silentube.com/ to drag the button to your toolbar.

Image of YouTube logo

I've included this YouTube Video Clip for two reasons...

  1. PR executive Graeme Anthony, using YouTube Annotations, has created a series of linked video clips that enables users to click through to the sections they are most interested in viewing. Creating such series have great potential in so many areas of teaching & Learning;
    and...
  2. A well-edited and informative video resume could be the perfect complement to a traditional resume. Videos can enable job seekers to showcase t...

YouTube and Creative Common

Image YouTube Blog Header

Allowing broad noncommercial use of otherwise protected material significantly expands the pool of resources faculty and learners can use in teaching and learning. Knowing quickly and easily whether a piece of content can be distributed, modified, or remixed fits well with the teaching style of many practitioners—they want to be able to search for up-to-the-minute artifacts and include them in lectures and learning materials, without having to worry about obtaining permission.

On Jun...

Embed Plus

Posted by John Dalziel on Sunday, December 19, 2010, In : Video

More and more learning providers are using video for teaching and learning as well as for evidence; in many cases these videos are stored on their YouTube Channel.

The ways in which learners, practitioners, assessors, verifiers etc., can interact around these YouTube videos have been the same for too long. It was about time someone devised a system letting users do more with them.

Embed Plus is such a system.

In general terms, any video that users embed, using EmbedPlus, has a ...

vReveal

Posted by John Dalziel on Friday, July 30, 2010, In : Video

Here is one free video editor that practitioners should check out; not just for themselves but for their learners to use before submitting evidence for portfolios.

vReveal is software that offers basic one-click editing for videos allowing users to...

  • stabilize,
  • sharpen and
  • clear up blurry videos easily (I know because I've tried it out with a video clip taken by Colin)

Once vReveal has been installed, start by...

  • importing videos into the gallery;
  • select the video to edit and preview...

Media Converter

Posted by John Dalziel on Saturday, July 10, 2010, In : Video

A number of learning providers block video sites like...

  • blip.tv,
  • break.com,
  • dailymotion.com,
  • facebook.com,
  • livevideo.com,
  • metacafe.com,
  • myvideo.ch,
  • myvideo.de,
  • veoh.com, and
  • youtube.com

But so many of these sites have video clips that will enhance current teaching & learning.

Media Converter allows users to 'grab' a copy of these clips to use off-line.

Is it legal? In their words...

"This website operates in a grey area. So it is hard to say if it ...

Save the Newspaper Video...

Posted by John Dalziel on Monday, February 15, 2010, In : Video

Jesse Brown brings a sarcastic view on the need to save newspapers from the Internet.

"How will mankind survive if we let the Internet kill newspapers? Classifieds, crosswords, comics and ads MUST be delivered to our doors each day or society will collapse."
