Blitz School offers educational workshops with exciting activities to help learn about World War II. Based in Greater Manchester, their website offers valuable resources.
Take a look in the Free Resources section for a fascinating video lesson, fact files about a number of objects from the period and lots of other teaching resources.

BBC: Domesday Reloaded

Originally released on Laserdisc, the BBC project to record daily lives , back in 1986, is now available on the web.

Find out how your area has changed.

Search by entering...

a place name; or

a postcode.

click a square covering that location on a map.

Users can then view photographs and read written accounts from that time.

Perhaps history/local history/community/etc. practitioners and their learners can update existing entries (sadly the blank areas can't be updated).

is a service that Local History Practitioners will find invaluable;

allows anyone with a Google account to place images within the setting of current Google Maps Streetview imagery;

allows visitors to explore the imagery added by others.

New National Heritage List

The National Heritage List for England is a searchable database of all nationally designated heritage assets including...

Listed Buildings;
Scheduled Monuments;
Registered Parks and Gardens;
Registered Battlefields; and
Protected Wreck Sites

In the past practitioners and/or learners had to search various different sources and websites to access the records and datasets relating to the above, now they can find them all in one place - on the new National Heritage List for England.

History for Music Lovers is very much a place to learn and to laugh. The lyrics to popular songs (both old and new) have been transformed from karaoke into history lessons with a touch of humour.

The French Revolution (Lady Gaga); embedded below...

This collection of homemade videos have been created by teachers Amy Burvall and Herb Mahelona, from a school in Oauhu, Hawaii.

Such multimedia will get the attention of many learners in the classroom and may stimulate them to write and produce their own history (or other subject) music videos using tools such as Audacity and BB_Flashback.

YouTube Time Machine (YTTM)

I know this will frighten many Techies, as this is in alpha (if you never take a risk, you never do anything!), but I like the format of this YouTube Time Machine (YTTM).

YTTM allows visitors to pick a year and watch a video from it; it goes all the way back to 1860! Yes I know they didn't have video then but, they did have the very first audio recordings; on YTTM you can listen to them.

This could be great for history lessons and in my case nostalgia.

Art History; Resources on the Web

Art History: resources on the web, is maintained by Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe, an art history professor; is, in the main, a collection of links to various art topics, but what makes it different from other resource sites, is both the level of organisation and the vast number of links relating to art history.

Animated History

History Animated <http://historyanimated.com/newhistoryanimated/> provides animations of the...

American Revolution;
US Civil War; and
US Pacific Campaign in WWII.

In each of these animations visitors will see the animated movement of armies displayed on a map. Each animation is accompanied by captions describing the strategies of the armies as well as the results and consequences of each battle.

All of the animations on History Animated are available for free viewing on the website.

History Animated is an excellent resource for History practitioners who find that the animations are a significant improvement over drawing or pointing to places on a map.

To me, the preview of the Battle of Britain that will, when it is up and running, appear on the New Website, called - WWIIAnimated.com is the jewel in the crown.

Harvest of History is a website produced by the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York, USA.

Harvest of History is designed to help learners and practitioners explore the origins and development of modern farming practices. Its design is ideal for Family Learning Practitioners but some of the content of Harvest of History could also be used with older learners to spark discussion about the development of modern agriculture.
