Posted by John Dalziel on Saturday, October 23, 2010 In : Online Tools

Risk assessment is a legal requirement, and if you employ five or more people you must record the significant findings of the assessment.

But it is not difficult and you don't need to pay consultants to help you with it. Who knows your business better than anyone else? You do!

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has produced the web tool to help employers to consider relevant hazards in their office and think about how they control them to keep employees safe.

The tool will take you ...

Smokescreen

Posted by John Dalziel on Saturday, July 10, 2010 In : Resources

"You don't know me, but I know you..."

Smokescreen is a cutting-edge game about life online, produced by Channel 4 here in the UK.

Many learners and learning providers use Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and MSN to keep up with mates, peers, etc. - and they've all heard the stories about parties on Facebook being mobbed, or people getting stalked on MSN. The question is, what would you do if it happened to you?

Over 13 missions, Smokescreen follows the story of Max Winston and Cal Godfr...

Safeguarding: BrainPOP

Posted by John Dalziel on Friday, April 30, 2010 In : Safeguarding

BrainPOP, which I have talked about in the past, creates animated, curriculum-based content that engages learners, supports educators, and bolsters achievement.

Included on the BrainPOP website are two video clips that are ideal for both group and one-on-one settings; ideal for introducing safeguarding to younger learners.

Visit...

  • http://www.brainpopjr.com/artsandtechnology/technology/internetsafety/zoom.weml for the Internet Safety video - or

KnowURL

Posted by John Dalziel on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 In : Safeguarding

I would expect you to think twice (and thrice) before clicking on a shortened URL. Shortened URLs can...

  • lead you anywhere - from...
    • a NSFW site (Not Suitable For Work) to an
    • outright repository of viruses...

...the risks are endless.

This is why know url is intrinsically attractive.

KnowURL offers a tool that will let users take a shortened URL and have the full destination address displayed. In that way, users will quickly be able to determine if the link actually directs to wher...

Think! Road Safety

Posted by John Dalziel on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 In : Road Safety

"The THINK! campaign is not about the motorist as such, or the pedestrians, or cyclists, motor cyclists, etc. It is about people, about the citizen, about each and all of us. It is about how we all use our roads safely, whether we happen to be motoring, walking, cycling or whatever. This is mainly to build a mood of "we're all in it together" to have greater effect."

The website targets people from childhood to adulthood, aiming to instill good practice at a very early age with frequent rem...

Online Safety Planner

Posted by John Dalziel on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 In : Safeguarding

A big thank you to Malcolm Bodley, E-Learning Advisor, JISC Regional Support Centre - Eastern, for bringing this resource to our attention.

The SWGfL eSafety Self Review Framework enables learning providers, or indeed any organisation that work with children/learners, to challenge their own eSafety provision. It provides the ability to track and monitor progress, highlighting aspirational eSafety levels.

How do you compare?

The eSafety Self Review Framework is available as an electroni...
