Disallow Usage of Your Information for Third Party Adverts

Posted by John Dalziel on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, In : Safeguarding

In the communication Section of this website I've posted an article about Skype using Advertisements.

By default, Skype allows the usage of "non-personally identifiable information" about you when serving third party ads.

If you are uncomfortable with this due to privacy concerns, you can change the default setting to disallow this...

  1. Open the Skype application;
  2. Go to the menu at the top, click Skype and select Privacy;
    Image of Skype Menu dropdown
  3. In the right pane of the dialog box that appears, go to the b...

Facebook Privacy Settings for Teens

Posted by John Dalziel on Saturday, March 5, 2011, In : Safeguarding

Facebook's default privacy settings are not for everyone – especially minors & vulnerable adults – which is why Facebook allows users to customize their settings.

The Connect Safely chart shows recommendations for most teens.

Note: not all teens have the same level of maturity; the chart could be reviewed with learners to help them make informed decisions in setting the right privacy settings for them.

Visit http://bit.ly/eSDdtE to access the Connect Safely chart.

Staying Safe Online

Posted by John Dalziel on Monday, January 31, 2011, In : Safeguarding

I've said many times before but, older learners can be engaged with "safeguarding"/"eSafety" if they are put into the role of protecting younger friends, family, family of friends etc. Those engaged with Family Learning and or Initial Teacher Training must have a responsibility to ensure parents, guardians, carers or new teachers, NQT's etc., are aware of how to keep younger people "safe".

KnowURL

Posted by John Dalziel on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, In : Safeguarding

I would expect you to think twice (and thrice) before clicking on a shortened URL. Shortened URLs can...

  • lead you anywhere - from...
    • a NSFW site (Not Suitable For Work) to an
    • outright repository of viruses...

...the risks are endless.

This is why know url is intrinsically attractive.

KnowURL offers a tool that will let users take a shortened URL and have the full destination address displayed. In that way, users will quickly be able to determine if the link actually directs to wher...

Online Safety Planner

Posted by John Dalziel on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, In : Safeguarding

A big thank you to Malcolm Bodley, E-Learning Advisor, JISC Regional Support Centre - Eastern, for bringing this resource to our attention.

The SWGfL eSafety Self Review Framework enables learning providers, or indeed any organisation that work with children/learners, to challenge their own eSafety provision. It provides the ability to track and monitor progress, highlighting aspirational eSafety levels.

How do you compare?

The eSafety Self Review Framework is available as an electroni...
