Disallow Usage of Your Information for Third Party Adverts

In the communication Section of this website I've posted an article about Skype using Advertisements.

By default, Skype allows the usage of "non-personally identifiable information" about you when serving third party ads.

If you are uncomfortable with this due to privacy concerns, you can change the default setting to disallow this...

Open the Skype application;
Go to the menu at the top, click Skype and select Privacy;
In the right pane of the dialog box that appears, go to the bottom and...
- uncheck the Allow Skype to use non-personally identifiable information about me when serving third party ads checkbox
  and
- for added privacy, also uncheck the Accept Skype browser cookies checkbox;

...Click the Save button.

Facebook Privacy Settings for Teens

Facebook's default privacy settings are not for everyone – especially minors & vulnerable adults – which is why Facebook allows users to customize their settings.

The Connect Safely chart shows recommendations for most teens.

Note: not all teens have the same level of maturity; the chart could be reviewed with learners to help them make informed decisions in setting the right privacy settings for them.

I hope that you and your learners never experience identity theft; if you have, or know someone who has, then you are aware that the experience can be a harrowing one.

The burden is upon individuals to protect their personal information while using the internet. I know a large number of managers, practitioners, techies etc., that will tell you the only perfect way to protect yourself online and prevent identity theft is to not use it at all! The "Inspectors", under the Common Inspection Framework, won't accept that as an option. As learning providers you have a responsibility to ensure learners are aware of how to use technology safely and that includes the Internet.
