Subtangent is a website well worth a visit; it provides several flash games including a few which mimic the letters and the numbers rounds from the Countdown TV show.

The Subtangent website was produced by Duncan Keith, a Maths teacher here in England (UK).

Literacy lessons – choose a mixture of vowels and consonants and then see who can make the longest word from the letters provided.

Maths lessons – see who can get the closest to the target number using combinations of numbers provided. This is a great mental warm up activity.

Games, like this can be played online or downloaded for offline use.

Note: There are other games on the Subtangent site – however some can now only be played offline to reduce site traffic – but they are easy to download and play.

Nuclear Power Plant Simulator Game

I hope, in the wake of the recent Japanese Nuclear Reactor crisis, that I don't upset anybody by including this Nuclear Power Plant Simulator.

The Nuclear Power Plant Simulator raises awareness about how nuclear energy is harnessed to generate electricity and what it takes to control a nuclear plant.

The game places users inside the control room of a small commercial nuclear power plant. The object to produce as much electricity as possible without causing a core meltdown. To do so users will have to run the plant to its limits but care must be taken not to push too hard and cause damage. If users don't push too hard it will not break down, but their energy output and rating will be lower. They have to find the balance between efficient energy production and safe handling of the equipment.

Users have to adjust...

the control rods to produce heat in the reactor;
the primary coolant to carry heat to the heat exchanger; and
the secondary coolant to take steam to the turbine and on to the cooling tower.

There is also a supply of emergency coolant if required. Numerous gauges and screens and warning lights keeps users busy during the entire gameplay.

There is as big a debate about whether or not playing games enhances learning as there is about if science learners should have to memorize the periodic table.

Whether you think it's right or wrong, in either case, learners do play games and there are still lots of learning providers that make the latter a curriculum requirement. EcoKids, a Canadian-based organization, provides free resources for teaching and learning about topics in environmental science.
