Tucoola is a great site for parents and children with great content for the family and an information centre with details regarding the development progress of their children.

If Family Learning Practitioners are looking for some basic skills practice activities it's worth bookmarking Tucoola.

The site has a section of single user activities for younger learners and section of two user activities for parents to play with their children.

Activities include things like simple jigsaw puzzles, checkers, and basic number games. The site can be used without registration, but the option to access activity reports for their children might be an appealing feature for parents; such parents will need to register themselves.

One Youtube channel that Family Learning and Science Practitioner should check out is Steve Spangler Science.

Steve's Youtube channel shares lots of big Science activities and events that he has been involved in. However, there are also a number of ‘Sick Science’ videos which feature tricks and experiments that can be played in the classroom. They’re ideal for provoking discussion about how the ‘trick’ works and talking about the Science concepts involved.

Practitioners could also try to recreate the experiment as many of them involve everyday classroom objects.

For many learners, Study Jams could be an engaging way for them to independently review topics or learn about new topics.

Study Jams is designed to help learners review maths and science information through songs and videos.

To use Study Jams...

learners search for and select a topic in the maths or science category.

short tutorials, on the selected topic are provided in the form of...
- a video,
- a slideshow, or
- a song; when there is a song available it is presented in a karaoke format for learners to sing along with (if they like).

To extend these activities Maths, Science and Family Learning Practitioners could challenge learners...

Story Time For Me

By making reading more interactive and animating the illustrations, "StoryTimeForMe" not only provides free books for young children, it puts reading up there with video games.

StoryTimeForMe encourages young children to pay more attention to reading, the free books are...

made available and played as slow animations within a web browser. The animation of the books develops young children's interest;
provide young readers with an interactive experience.

The text within each of the books is simple and highlighted while being read. The highlighting again develops young children's interest and encourages them to read the words that are displayed.

Through the controls located at the bottom of the page users can turn off the animation and the audio, highlight the narrated phrase, and manually turn pages of the book.
Clicking on individual words in the text results in them being read again and if underlined a pop-up image appears as well, to help understanding.

That's not all StoryTimeForMe has to offer; the books often contain socially relevant topics e.g. the books illustrate why children should not bully, why the environment should be cleaned, etc. Therefore StoryTimeForMe not only works to excite and engage children about reading, it also tries to teach them moral lessons.
